Alphonse Izzo remembers hearing Strauss’ "Thus Spake Zarathustra"
as a boy while staring at a tank of gold fish swimming in endless circles. He’s attempted to recreate that strange and beautiful juxtaposition through his music ever since.
Mr. Izzo has written music for The New York Miniaturist Ensemble,
Tin Hat Trio, Performance 20/20, Klangensamble, The Quey Percussion Duo, Quintaero woodwind quintet, composer & violist David Heetderks, percussionist Gene Koshinski, Goo-rilla Music, Oboist Charles Huang,
percussionist Bill Solomon, and the Hartt Dance Division among others.
Awards include 1st. prize-The 3 C's Composition Competition,
the Quey Percussion Duo International Composition Competition;
2nd. prize, the Ed Diemente Award, Hartt Talent Award and the
A&D Burton Scholarship. From 2007-2008 he was awarded a fellowship to teach undergraduate composition at the Hartt School. He has also been guest lecturer at Hartt with regard to his work with graphic notation and music utilizing open forms.
His teachers include Ingram Marshall, Robert Carl, David Macbride,
Larry Alan Smith, Steve Gryc, and Istvan B'Racz. He has participated
in masterclasses with Paul Moravec and Michael Schelle.
In addition to his work as a composer, Mr. Izzo is co-founder of
SoundUnderground, a long running concert series based in New
Haven, CT.
Alphonse Izzo's music has been premiered in the USA, Canada, Europe and Argentina. His music is represented by Honey Rock Publishing and Canondale Publishing. His work appears on CD via Trace Label and Vox Novus labels.
